Charcoal lattes are here to save us from all the unicorn drinks of the world

Black is the new black, and that’s how it will always be.

In a refreshing respite from the highly-saturated colors of recent popular beverages, the charcoal latte is starting to make a name for itself on social media.

Several London and Australian cafes are offering the gray-hued drink on their menus and the Instagrammed results certainly look intriguing.

The charcoal latte’s defining feature is, of course, activated charcoal. While there are many lattes that claim to be full of nutrients and super ingredients, activated charcoal actually does have a proven detoxing effect on your digestive system, according to Brit + Co, when consumed in the right quantity.

As for what else goes into the latte, the recipe seems to vary from place to place. Farm Girl in London uses date syrup and cashew milk along with the activated charcoal. Studio 3 Australia, a yoga studio and nourish bar, makes theirs with coconut milk and coconut syrup.

We’re sure that charcoal lattes will soon be making their way over to the U.S., but in the meantime you can try your hand by making your own using a recipe from Brit + Co that calls for vanilla almond milk and vanilla extract.

And if you do end up trying one, please report back as to whether or not it colored your entire mouth black. We are very curious.
